Calcite is part of the trigonal (rhombohedral) crystal system with crystallographic axes equalling a 1 = a2 = a3 ≠ c. The a-axes intersect at 120 o which are all contained within a plane 90 o to c (Figure 1.)(Klein & Dutrow, 2007). Cleavages are common in {10 1 1} and growth twins are common in {0001} and {10 1 1} (Shelley, 1985).
